Unfied Messaging as Legacy vMail Replacement

Legacy Voice Messaging Replacement

Until recently, Voice Messaging systems had not seen a lot of changes. They remained tied to the traditional TDM, telephone line-centric architecture, requiring replicated data stores, self-contained networks and "homed" PBXs. The introduction of IP Telephony and the performance and reliability increases that have been noted lately, coupled with the end-of-life notifications by manufacturers of traditional TDM systems, such as Octel Aria and Serenade, have generated a groundswell of interest in newer IP-PBX and Voice Messaging technologies.

When a regional operator of healthcare facilities began planning new clinics, voice over IP was at the top of the list of new initiatives. The cost savings in implementing VoIP during the initial office build-out were considerable, as are the ongoing decreases in telephone line charges. VoIP also allowed IT management to seek out newer implementations for Voice Messaging and Unfied Messaging, both for new locations and as replacements for Voice Messaging systems at existing offices.

The entire IT department was involved in the decision-making and implementation process of the company's migration to IPT and Unified Messaging. IT management needed to ensure that adding voice over their IP network would meet the quality of service expected of telephone communications. The network staff had to vette their infrastructure's ability to handle the increased workload and the Microsoft Exchange administrators couldn't jeopardize the stability of their existing messaging system with unnecessary and irreversible changes to the Active Directory schema.
